Questions people ask about business insurance

How much is small business insurance?

It depends on your type of business, premises size, location, off-site activity and the coverage limits you choose, so there is no single price. Triple-I says business owners policy premiums, for example, reflect those factors plus building construction, security features and fire hazards. Triple-I also names property, liability, workers' compensation and business auto as four core coverages most small businesses buy. A licensed agent can quote the mix that fits.

How much is liability insurance for a small business?

It depends on what your business does, its size, where it operates, how much off-site work it does and the liability limits you choose, so prices vary widely between businesses. Triple-I describes general liability as covering costs if someone is injured at your business or from using your product or service. A licensed agent can quote it based on your actual operations.

How do I get bonded and insured for my small business?

Being insured means you carry an insurance policy, such as general liability, while being bonded means you have a surety bond that guarantees to a customer or licensing agency that you will meet an obligation. Unlike insurance, you must repay the surety for any claim it pays. Which bonds you need depends on your trade, license and contracts; a licensed agent can help you find out.

What is the difference between a BOP and general liability insurance?

A business owners policy (BOP) bundles liability coverage with property and business-income coverage in one package, while general liability alone covers costs if your business injures someone or damages their property. Neither covers workers' compensation or commercial auto, and a BOP does not cover professional liability. Eligibility depends on your industry and size, so a licensed agent can check your fit.

Do I need workers' compensation insurance in Florida?

Yes, once you reach the employee threshold for your industry. Florida requires workers' compensation for construction employers with one or more employees and for other employers with four or more, counting corporate officers and LLC members unless they hold an exemption. Non-construction sole proprietors and partners are not counted unless they elect coverage. Agriculture has separate thresholds.

How do I get a certificate of insurance (COI)?

Ask your insurance agent or insurer, and give them the certificate holder's name and address and any insurance wording your contract requires. A COI only shows what coverage you have; it does not change your policy. Additional insured status and a waiver of subrogation (your insurer giving up the right to pursue that party after paying a claim) may require an endorsement on the policy itself.
