Questions people ask about renters (ho-4) insurance

What does renters insurance cover?

Renters insurance covers your belongings, your personal liability, and extra living costs if a covered loss makes your rental unlivable. Belongings are protected against listed events such as fire, smoke, theft, windstorm and sudden pipe leaks, generally anywhere in the world. It does not cover the building itself, which is your landlord's responsibility, and special limits often apply to items like jewelry.

How much is renters insurance?

According to NAIC data published by Triple-I, the average renters insurance premium in Florida was $181 a year in 2022, compared with $171 nationally. Your price depends on the coverage amount, your deductible, where the building is, and its construction and age, so a quote for your own unit can be higher or lower. A licensed agent can run quotes for you.

Does renters insurance cover flooding?

No, standard renters insurance typically does not cover flood damage. Florida's required flood disclosure for leases of one year or longer says so directly. Renters can buy a separate contents-only flood policy through the National Flood Insurance Program, which has a 30-day waiting period, or ask an agent about private flood coverage. Water from a sudden pipe break is different and is typically a covered event.

Does renters insurance cover mold?

Sometimes: renters insurance can pay for mold damage to your belongings when the mold results directly from a covered event, such as a burst pipe. It generally does not cover mold caused by ongoing moisture or poor maintenance. The building itself is your landlord's responsibility. Policies differ, so check yours for mold exclusions or limits and ask your agent before you need to file a claim.

Does my roommate need their own renters insurance?

Usually yes, because a roommate's belongings and liability may not be covered under your policy. The NAIC suggests each adult tenant consider separate coverage, though some roommates can buy one policy together, and some policies extend to a domestic partner who is specifically named. Insurers differ, so a licensed agent can explain how a shared or separate policy would treat each person.

Will renters insurance cover theft from my car?

Usually yes: renters insurance generally covers your belongings against listed events like theft even when they are away from home, so items stolen from your car can be a covered claim. Your deductible and policy limits apply, and special limits cover items like jewelry or cameras. The vehicle itself is not covered by renters insurance; that falls under your auto policy.
